BYTE Devlog 10/20/23: Just some art

This was a lighter week in BYTE, but I still managed to make some good progress and also get some good polish elements in. My first chunk of work was making a couple of small bug fixes on Keons’ sitting animation, ensuring that his robes were properly bending with his knees, and then adding the scene for when you finish wiping all of the computers. I also added a brief little cutscene for when the day changes to better communicate the new day and date. It’s a small change but it adds a lot to the feeling of the game and ensuring the player feels like they’re seeing the things they need to see.

Next, I went into 3D art mode. The next core section of BYTE is the part where Arthur and Lucy, the couple to be wed, arrive at the castle. This means that I needed to create their art. I did both of their 3D models first, starting with Lucy. I tried to keep both of them pretty quintessential ’80s prep, and for the most part, I succeeded.

At this point in the process I’m pretty comfortable with the modeling process and getting these out quickly and consistently with my style.

Once I got their models done I got to work on their character art as well. I didn’t have time to do both of them, but I managed to get Arthur’s in and he came out looking really well. I didn’t really need to make many adjustments to his colors or anything. Again, my process for this is pretty solidified and I’m able to get these out pretty quickly.

Once I finish Lucy’s art, I’ll be able to script the next few days of BYTE and kick off the final round of combat in the stretch of BYTE that I’m making for this semester. Hopefully, I can get through Friday, June 1st, finishing up not just THE FIRST FULL MONTH OF BYTE (sort of) but also setting me up nicely for the final week (and change) of BYTE: Write your vows in blood (the new title for this month came to me this week as well).
