Delightfully, we’re running out of new mechanics and systems that need to be added to BYTE.
For this week, because I was a little busy, I focused just on getting the story to the next big combat section, where Jonathan needs to install the DJ equipment on the computers in the chapel. To do that, I needed to create Lucy’s character art and then write all of the necessary dialogue to get Jonathan to the next chapel sequence.
This began by writing a nice, peaceful weekend for Jonathan. He has a lovely Saturday to himself in the solarium and on Sunday finally finds the time to shave for the first time since arriving at the castle. This…shall we say…does not end as he had planned. Dracula finds the presence of the mirror a little objectionable and lets Jonathan know about it.

Then it finally came time for the soon-to-be-married couple to arrive at the castle. Lucy and Arthur arrive, much to Jonathan’s surprise, and the characters all spend some time catching up as Jonathan gives them a tour of the castle. These scenes then end with Keons asking Jonathan to install the DJ equipment in the chapel and Jonathan having a harrowing experience trying to purchase a plane ticket.
In this section, I also experimented with auto-advancing the days between the scenes because there is not much for Jonathan to do anyway. I think this does a better job of keeping the scenes flowing and avoiding weird downtime sections where the player doesn’t have any kind of goal.
We’re finally to the final core story segment of this demo of BYTE. Installing the DJ equipment will carry the player to the wedding, where the game will reach its dramatic conclusion (for now). This upcoming week will be spent designing the next battles and writing about half of the remaining scenes (up to Quincey’s arrival). I will also be creating Quincey’s art in preparation for the last five days of BYTE. Then, the week after, I will finish creating the character art and write the remainder of the scenes. This will complete the core content of BYTE and give me a solid month or so to work on updating my various systems and polishing the game to a shine.
